Collecting Q&A: Will Temperature Fluctuations Damage My Wine?

Q: I have built a small cellar in my basement. Even with a temperature control unit, the temperature went up to 60-62 during the recent heat waves. How dangerous this kind of fluctuation for my wine?-- Roman Derevyanny

A: If you had told me the temperature had risen to 75 degrees, there would be cause for alarm, as wine ages twice as fast at that temperature. However, short-term exposure to 60-62 degree temperatures should not cause a problem. But once the heat subsides, if your unit remains at 62 degrees, I would contact the vendor or manufacturer.
