Collecting Q&A: Is UV Protection Sufficient?

Q: Recently I bought a refrigerated wine cellar. I put it in my living room, however, it is exposed to the ambient light. The owner manual says that the glass door has UV protection. As general rule I know that heat, light and vibration are enemies of wine. Do you think this may affect my wines? What should I do? -- Leonardo

A: I'd pursue the question of UV protection with the retailer from which you purchased the unit, or the manufacturer. Odds are that unless the unit is exposed to direct sunlight -- in which case you should re-position it -- the risk to your wine from incandescent household lighting is fairly slim. If after your research, you aren't satisfied that your wine is safe, then ask your supplier to replace the glass door with a wooden one.
