Collecting Q&A: How do I choose a reseller?

Q: I have a collection of about 1,500 bottles that I am looking to consign, consisting mainly of Alsace, Rhône and Burgundy from the best producers. Where should I start to research the best choice for a reseller?--Chad Waite

A: I would prepare an inventory noting the producer, vintage and estimated condition (particularly ullage, the distance between where the cork ends and the wine begins) of the wines in your collection. Where possible, indicate if the wine was acquired on release, and how it has been stored. Next, send your material to reputable auction houses and retailers and evaluate their response in terms of estimates and seller's fees.
