Collecting Q&A: Are Sliding Racks Harmful for Wine?

Q: I store my 350 bottle collection of red wines in two Eurocave wine refrigerators that have mostly rolling shelves. I like the ease of viewing my inventory with the rolling shelves, but is it detrimental to the wine if "slightly shaken" every other day? How important is it to store wine motionless over 5 - 10 years? --Scott J., Nevada

A: Most cautionary notes about wine and movement pertain to storing bottles close to heavy equipment such as a furnace, refrigerator, air conditioning unit etc., where the vibration is constant, rigorous and potentially harmful. I also happen to own a couple of Eurocave units, and do not believe that the shaking that results from retrieving a bottle or two every other day has any long-term effect on the quality of my collection. If your units are like mine, they may come with a couple of stationary shelves which actually make it more difficult to access a bottle than the rolling ones.
