Collecting Q&A: Age of Non-Vintage Champagne

Q: How can you tell when a bottle of non-vintage Champagne or sparkling wine was bottled? I see non-vintage Champagne on the shelf and I not only don't know how old it is, I also don't know if several different bottlings from the same house have been mixed together. -- Herb

A: I don't believe you can tell. Sometimes there is a code on the punt (bottom) of the bottle, but you'll need a key to understand it -- which is generally unavailable. However, most reputable wine retailers sell only the most recent releases of non-vintage Champagne.
