New York has a new restaurant that may prove interesting for wine lovers. Jacques Le Magueresse, formerly of New Yorks Le Bernardin, has teamed up with executive chef Laurent Tourondel, who has done stints at Frances Troisgros and Las Vegas Palace Court, to open Cello on Manhattans Upper East Side. The restaurant is housed in a recently restored turn-of-the-century brownstone, with a 65-seat main dining room in the basement level, additional seating in the garden area and a private function room. Tourondel prepares modern French cuisine, with an emphasis on seafood. Three different prix fixe menus are offered for dinner: a $62 seasonal menu, a $74 lobster menu and a $90 caviar-tasting menu. The lunch menus are $32 and $38.
Tourondels cuisine is matched to a wine list featuring 200 selections, with an emphasis on Champagne and whites. Sommelier Gillian Ballance, formerly of Windows on the World in New York, handles the wine program. The list features 25 wines by the glass, providing plenty of flexibility for diners.
