California's Helen Turley Hires Associate Winemaker

HMT and Associates, the consulting firm of highly regarded California winemaker Helen Turley and her husband, John Wetlaufer, has hired its first associate winemaker, Susan Frey.

Turley makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under her own Marcassin label and consults for an exclusive list of clients such as Bryant Family Vineyard in Napa Valley and Martinelli Vineyard in Sonoma County. "I want to focus on little jewels of projects, producing about 3,000 cases apiece of exceptional wine," she said.

Frey, who met Wetlaufer at his Pinot Noir tasting group, comes to HMT after 15 years with Robert Mondavi Winery, the last five in their winemaking department. She will participate in all phases of production with HMT.

"This is perfect for me because it's small, detail-oriented, and I prefer to have input in every phase," said Frey. "It's especially great that I'll be able to work with Helen and learn from her."
