Pinot Noir vineyards drape across the hills surrounding Iron Horse Winery in the Russian River Valley, where our tour of Sonoma County finished on Monday evening. Winemaker David Munksgard started off the evening with a comparative tasting of three 1998 Pinot Noir barrel samples from three different blocks on the property, each with its own distinct sandstone-to-clay soils. One wine was more aromatic, another more earthy, and one the most complete in flavor and balance.
