We saw the first signs of veraison, the stage during which grapes begin to change color, at Ridge Lytton Springs West. Like last year, it has been cool in the Dry Creek Valley, and this Sangiovese is just now starting to show signs of veraison. Veraison generally starts unevenly, as is evident here. Also of note in this slide is the iron-rich red soil, which is slow to surrender its nutrients to the vine. The vine, forced to struggle, will yield grapes with more concentrated flavors. |
