Tuscan powerhouse Marchesi Antinori has acquired 100 percent ownership of Chile's Viña Haras de Pirque from the Matte family, which had previously been a 50 percent shareholder. The price of the deal, completed in July, was not disclosed.

Viña Haras de Pirque includes 247 acres of vineyards planted to Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in prime terroir in the Maipo Valley, south of the Chilean capital of Santiago. There is also a state-of-the-art winery on the property, which ranges from 1,800 to 2,100 feet above sea level at the base of the Andes.

“I really believe in the potential of the area,” said Antinori chief winemaker Renzo Cotarella, who is well-versed in winemaking outside his native Italy. Antinori also has wineries in California, Hungary, Malta and Romania. “We would like to do something different with Haras and make a great wine in the image of Antinori."

Haras de Pirque was founded as a joint venture in 2003 with the Matte family, major landowners in the area. The initial result of that collaboration was a red blend called Albis. Distribution in the United States of Haras de Pirque’s wines has been spotty over the past few years, but the winery has produced value-priced red and white varietals that have scored well.

Cotarella is planning an extensive replanting of the property’s vineyards. “I’m really confident. I think we can get some great results in terms of quality,” he said.
