2012 Bordeaux Futures Release Chart

With the 2012 en primeur campaign underway in Bordeaux, we'll be posting new prices here as they are released

The 2012 Bordeaux en primeur campaign presents plenty of opportunities—and challenges—to the châteaus, négociant houses, retailers and customers all over the world. The vintage quality is considered to be fair, with bright spots, especially on the Right Bank (see Wine Spectator senior editor James Molesworth's barrel sample reviews).

But after a 2011 campaign that went nowhere, prices must be right for the wine to sell. A good futures campaign allows the châteaus to sell their unfinished wines two years in advance of bottling and have cash on hand to make the best wines they can the following year; it allows buyers to get access to a wine at a lower price than it may fetch once it reaches retail shelves. But if the prices are too high, customers stand to lose on their investments.

With excitement centered around the phenomenal 2009 and 2010 wines on the market and much of the 2011 wines still unsold, the strategy of the 2012 campaign has been worth watching. We'll be updating this chart with new release prices as they are announced.

Thank you my Chinese friends for turning my cellar from French to Italian and Spanish. Sounds like its about to head back to Bordeaux!

Allan - forget the Chinese. It's the bordelais themselves that drove down the price of their wines through greed. By chasing a windfall in the Asian markets, they snubbed their most loyal buyers in the US and UK. So what did we do? We stocked our cellars to the brim with wines from other places that didn't command as high a price. There's no room left for bordeaux, even if the 2012s are the fifth consecutive "Vintage of the Century."
