Wineries are adding "smart" tags to bottles, but will digital marketing sell more wine?

It's hard to judge the quality of a wine by its front label, but that's how many people buy their bottles. Sure, they might glance at the back label, but wineries can't squeeze much helpful information into that space. Thanks to technology, however, wineries have a new option—QR codes.

A growing number of producers are turning to the small QR (short for Quick Response) codes, which customers can scan with a smartphone to find links to websites with information about what's in the bottle. It's an attempt to connect with a younger generation of wine drinkers, and producers such as Justin in Paso Robles, MacRostie in Sonoma Coast, Napa Valley's Chappellet and Charles Smith Wines in Washington, to name a few, are using it to separate their brands from the pack. Foreign producers are also starting to adopt QR codes for bottles sent to the United States market and others. But the question remains—will consumers use them?

For consumers, the benefit comes from the ability to make a more informed decision when purchasing wine. Or, they can learn more about a wine they've already bought, after they pop the cork and sit down with a glass. Some codes open simple tasting sheets with information on the vineyards or vintage. Others, like those used by Oregon's Argyle Winery, are more complex and link to content such as winemaker videos and food-and-wine pairing suggestions. "I think there is a lot of room to make them high-quality [and] educational, and to try to get people engaged," said Rollin Soles, winemaker at Argyle.

Many producers are turning to QR to tell a story about their wines. Customers who scan codes on bottles from Dry Creek Vineyard, in Sonoma County, can watch videos about the winery's history. "I could travel 365 days a year and never be able to tell that story to enough people," said Kim Stare Wallace, vice president of the winery.

QR codes were originally developed by a supplier for Toyota as a way to track auto parts through the assembly process. But they've been popping up recently in magazines, display advertisements and on a variety of products. The square codes, usually the size of a postage stamp, feature black-and-white designs that resemble pixels. (Some new codes come in multiple colors.)

Numerous apps on smartphones can scan the code, using a phone's camera, then translate the design into a Web address. Mark Smith, CEO at QR4Wine, which designs codes for the wine industry, explains that each code is really a string of characters that make up a link. "The camera phone reader converts that image back into the string," he said.

One of the draws of QR technology is that it can link wine drinkers to a winery from almost any location, as long as they have a smartphone. "It doesn't matter where they are," said Wallace. "That story can be told to them in two minutes, whether they are in a restaurant or a wine shop."

A bonus for producers is that they need to create only a single code for a particular bottling, such as their flagship wine. They can keep the same code but change the linked Web page for subsequent vintages. Producers can also create different codes for bottles that are exported. "There is no language barrier," says Smith. "You can create a Chinese-language page and create a code that links to that specific page."

It's unclear how quickly consumers are adopting QR, however. And while QR may be the most widely available technology, it's not the only service offered. Microsoft has developed its own 2D barcode technology, called Microsoft Tag.

Another technology is Near Field Communication (NFC), which embeds radio frequency chips in tags. Smartphones with NFC readers have begun to arrive on the market, allowing customers to quickly jump to product information and coupons by simply waving their phones by the tag. Phones can also be linked to bank information, potentially allowing consumers to buy the bottle at checkout with a quick scan of their phone.

Producers such as Opus One and Bevan Cellars in Napa are employing NFC tags, with bottles featuring a stylized "N" logo on the back label so consumers can identify where they can use their NFC-capable phones. Bevan plans to update the content associated with its wines every six to nine months.

No matter what, the most important element will always be the wine in the bottle. But new technologies may help consumers have a better idea what's in it before they buy.

As an avid wine consumer, it frustrates me to no end when shopping for wine in a store or wine shop where there are NO shelf talkers or information on the wine labels I haven't heard of. So, as a stop gap, I always bring my iphone whenever shopping in store for wine so that I can read WS tasting notes (if available) or open cellar tracker to read consumer reviews (which are almost always tougher critics compared to WS reviews). Standing in a wine shop, I just want the tasting notes from multiple sources laid out in an easy-reading format on my phone. In my opinion, I'd rather the wine shop take the initiative to add the QR codes as part of the shelf talker so that I can snap and read "just the facts" and make a decision vs adding QR codes to the bottle which kinda of ruins the aesthetics. If I want to read up on the winery's history or watch a video, I'll do that on an ipad or computer before using my smartphone.

The QR is a great idea. I do not buy wine without checking WS or/ and Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book. As much as a Producer Inform the better. I demand to know all about vines, how long the wine can be held, acidity, tannin, structure of the wine and when it is ready to drink.
Certainly the ones that allow customers like me to make the right choise will serve us better and will have our preference.

I’m happy to see WS talking about this. I see QR codes as a valuable marketing tool not fully being utilized in the wine industry. It is one method of marketing, but it will take a considerable amount of effort for wineries and others to embrace it. Personally, I don’t think this is a “Flash in the Pan” marketing concept, rather, an opportunity for wineries to engage with consumers in a quick and efficient manner. My word of advice for anyone wanting to brand a product is to think outside of the box. Using QR codes on wine bottles and business cards would be a good start, but why not think big by plastering your code on the side of a building, a company car, a delivery truck or a bus? I bet Young’s Market, Southern Wines & Sprits or Columbia wine distributors would consider such an offer. ...and how about adding your QR code to a magazine ad or an employee tee shirt?

QR Codes will send up not increasing wine sales, only info on those wines. I prefer not to be swayed by those tasters who sip way too many wines a day to give me an accurate tasting note. Besides, it's my palate that will determine what is good and what is not. Now if a winemaker attaches to the code a savings coupon for that wine, i.e. buy 2 get 1, then it might increase some sales. I am not holding my breath.
