Does wine get classified as a serving of fruit?

Posted: October 28, 2010

Q: If 100 percent grape juice qualifies as a serving of fruit in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, does wine also qualify?

A: Nice try, but no. The concept of "food groups" is something that looks simple but gets complicated quickly. (Ice cream counts as servings of milk, while butter shows up in the "solid fats" group. Discuss.) The most recent iteration of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines was published in 2005 and places table wine in the "alcoholic beverages" category, which get grouped in the catch-all category of "extras" alongside solid fats and added sugars.
