France’s Southern Rhône Valley is dominated by Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but with the economy still tight and summer in full swing, it’s hard to figure spending north of $50 for a powerful, heady red. Instead, lighter-bodied versions with a similar profile of red and black fruits augmented with herb, tobacco and mineral notes, at $30 or less, are the order of the day.
