Unlike in the France’s Southern Rhône Valley, where an ocean of Côtes du Rhône and other appellations can provide some sub-$15 bottlings, “value” in the Northern Rhône is a bit more relative. You’ll have to plumb the wines in the $20 to $40 range from appellations like St.-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage to find some sleepers, but lovers of fresh, mineral-driven Syrah can be rewarded for that effort.
