Gavin Newsom - 2006

Gavin Newsom, who was elected mayor of San Francisco in 2003, got his start in the wine business in 1992 when he opened the PlumpJack Wines shop in the city’s Cow Hollow district. He later acquired the old Villa Mt. Eden winery in Oakville, and the renamed PlumpJack winery released its inaugural bottlings from the 1995 vintage. In 2000, Newsom challenged conventional wisdom by putting a screw cap on a $135 bottle of Napa Cabernet. The PlumpJack empire grew to include five restaurants—three with Wine Spectator Award of Excellence–winning wine lists—as well as a nightclub and two wine shops in San Francisco, two clothing stores, and hotels in Napa and Squaw Valley.
