Julia Child - 1998
Julia Child’s trademark greeting “Bon appétit!” was music to the ears of an entire generation who honed their home-cooking skills by watching her television show, The French Chef. Child began dominating the culinary stage when her book Mastering the Art of French Cooking appeared in 1961. Her goal was to demystify French cuisine for anxious Americans. The French Chef was a natural extension of a philosophy of the kitchen that Child adopted in the late 1940s, when she moved to France with her husband, Paul. There she also learned of the everyday reverence that the French accord to wine. She died in 2004, at age 91. Photographed in 1978.
