John De Luca - 1988
As president of the San Francisco–based Wine Institute, John De Luca was the point man for the U.S. wine industry for almost three decades, guiding it through some tricky political waters. Before his retirement in 2003, he fought, usually successfully, to protect the industry from tax increases and anti-alcohol groups and worked to resolve issues relating to direct shipping. One of his notable victories came in 1996, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognized the traditional role and health benefits of moderate wine drinking. Photographed in 2000.
