Abdallah Simon - 1987
During his long career in wine, Abdallah Simon ran one of America’s most important wine importing firms as chairman of Seagram Château & Estates Wine Co., which specializes in classified-growth Bordeaux. Worldly, multilingual and epicurean, Simon has come a long way from his youth in Baghdad, Iraq. Leaving the Middle East during World War II, Simon made his way to the United States only to be promptly drafted into the armed forces. After the war, he became interested in wine and in 1974 he founded Château & Estates for Seagram. Simon is one of the most knowledgeable and influential authorities on French wine, notably Bordeaux. Photographed in 1996.
