Albert Musard's idyllic inn is within a five-minute walk of Walla Walla's historic Main Street and just two blocks from Whitman's campus. None of the five rooms in the main house are alike: Idlewild, for example, comes with a king-size bed, wood-burning fireplace and a private deck, while Mayflowers has lace curtains, antiques, a queen-size bed and claw-foot tub. While children under the age of 12 aren't permitted in the main house, there is a two-bedroom carriage house on the grounds that is perfect for families with younger children. The candlelight breakfast, which is included in the room rate, offers homemade pastries and jams, plus house specialties like coddled eggs and quiche Lorraine. After a day of exploring the wineries—Walla Walla Vintners, Buty winery and Tamarack Cellars are all just minutes away by car—visit the Whitehouse-Crawford or the Marc (in the Marcus-Whitman Hotel) for dinner downtown.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more idyllic place to stay. This inn sits on a century-old farmstead, in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. The 35-acre property houses the Abeja winery, which produces Cabernet Sauvignon, and a series of outbuildings renovated into guest quarters. Each cottage is unique and offers a panoramic view of the vineyard and surrounding wheat fields. The Locust Suite, for example, is housed in a former barn, and it has the original oak paneling, oriental carpets and a gas fireplace. The cozy Bunk House takes a different turn, featuring a 1940s-style kitchen with hand-tiled counters, a four-poster feather bed and a private brick patio. For those who want to sample more Walla Walla wine, Walla Walla Vintners, Buty winery and Tamarack Cellars are a 10-minute drive away.

Though it's been open since 1928, this historic downtown hotel has modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet connections and free wireless access. Standard rooms are comfortable, but the two 571-square-foot, two-room suites are worth the extra money for their king-size beds and roomy living rooms. If the skies are clear, take a stroll to one of the 17 wineries within walking distance, including Forgeron Cellars, DaMa Wines and Ash Hollow, for a bit of Walla Walla wine.
