Hotels

Downtown Portland offers the top hotels, old guard restaurants and recreational activities. Both the Heathman Hotel and Paramount Hotel are located just off Pioneer Square, which has high-end shopping such as Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Saks Fifth Avenue. More secluded but still at a walkable distance is the River Place Hotel, right on the banks of the Willamette River.

Portland has numerous fine, historic hotels, but the Heathman is the city's class act. Located in the heart of the downtown cultural district and built in 1927, the hotel has an intimacy that makes it feel like a private club. The lobby, with its modern version of art deco interior, leads to the cozy, two-level Tea Court with striking Burmese teak paneling. The accommodations vary dramatically in size, ranging from 300 to 1,200 square feet and, as with most older hotels, the bathrooms are small. But all the rooms are furnished in an eclectic yet soothing mix of warm colors and modern Asian influences.

The Paramount has the charm of a classic urban hotel with the amenities of a modern inn, making it a good choice for visitors who like to stretch out and relax in their room between outings. The location, one block from Pioneer Square and across from the new Director Park, couldn't be more central. The basic rooms are larger than most you'll find downtown (about 400 square feet), and the best ones offer balconies and Jacuzzi tubs.
