Without centuries of experience and tradition, New World winemakers have had to discover the best sites for vineyards and the best varieties to use in each vineyard, in addition to adapting Old World winegrowing and winemaking methods to their regions.
Starting with a clean slate does have its advantages, however; many aspects of grapegrowing and winemaking are regulated by strict classification systems in the Old World.
Experimentation in the New World is ongoing, making the regions dynamic and the wines fascinating.
Varietal labeling is one result of the experimentation. Since no regulations restrict the grape varieties that may be grown in a given New World region, the region's name does not indicate the wine's varieties.
