Grenache is grown throughout southern France and thrives in the Southern Rhone's warm, dry climate and rocky soils.

The variety is a major component in Southern Rhone wines, which are blends named after their growing regions.

  • One of the best-known wines is Chateauneuf-du-Pape - the grapes come from vineyards surrounding the ancient town.
  • Another well-known wine, Cotes du Rhones, is named for the entire Rhone region; this indicates that the grapes may have been grown in a number of different villages within the Rhone region, though most are from the south.

In the Southern Rhone town of Tavel, Grenache makes refreshing rose wine.
