Course: Bordeaux

Class 2: The Médoc

MÉDOC AND HAUT-MÉDOC

North of the City of Bordeaux

The vineyards start in St.-Vivien-de-Médoc, near the northern tip of the triangular peninsula where the Gironde estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean. They occupy a 3- to 8-mile wide swath along the Garonne River and Gironde estuary.

The vineyards continue south for some 50 miles before giving way to the shops and residences in Bordeaux's northern suburbs.

The Prince and the Pauper

If you were to take the 90-minute drive along the D2, you'd notice a marked difference between the northern and southern sections of the Médoc.

The rural north is dotted with small vineyards and tidy homes. The south is opulent with perfectly manicured vineyards, stretching between grand châteaus.
