At the northernmost latitudes for growing grapes, Germany makes crisp, fragrant white wines and a scant few reds.
Many are sweet, including some of the world's greatest dessert wines, but not all. Germany produces many dry wines of distinction, and the best attain a perfect combination of crisp acidity, intense fruit flavors and fragrant aromas.
Although Germany has produced wine since Roman times, today the wines are not as well known as their French or Italian counterparts. One impediment to Germany's popularity is that most people associate German wines with sweet, inexpensive quaffs like Liebfraumilch.
