BUYING WINE AT RETAIL

A good retailer can offer helpful service, such as:

  • Recommendations
  • Wine tastings
  • Case discounts
  • Bottle returns

Find a good retailer through the Wine Spectator Online Retailer Database and wine-knowledgeable friends.

BUYING WINE IN A RESTAURANT

The sommelier can be your greatest ally, especially if you communicate:

  • The styles of wine you prefer
  • Your price range
  • The dishes you are ordering

The traditional serving ceremony provides the opportunity to:

  • Verify that it is the wine you ordered before the cork is pulled
  • Examine the condition of the cork
  • Taste the wine to make sure it's in good condition

Return a bottle if it's corked or spoiled, or isn't as described, by mentioning your concern and asking the sommelier to taste the wine.

Buy wine by-the-glass - experiment or please...
