Wine Spectator School

Class 8: Discovering the New World

introduction

BEYOND CALIFORNIA

For the majority of Americans, California provides the most familiar example of a New World wine region. Small wonder, since California accounts for more than 80% of wines produced in the United States. That said, nearly all the states grow grapes and produce wine. This class covers the most important states; Washington, Oregon and New York.

Beyond the United States, the New World countries of Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina have flourishing wine industries. South Africa is also on the horizon.

Like California, most New World regions look to Europe for their models. But also like California, experimentation in the vineyard and in the winery yields some outstanding wines.
