This Vancouver landmark is modelled on an 1890s-1920s chophouse theme. The food is hot and plentiful and there is an amazing variety of fresh fish; I counted 24 kinds of oysters last time I was there. Although the food is tasty this is not a top restaurant but rather a noisy, happy, high-volume restaurant with heavy paper over the tablecloths for each party. The geoduck chowder is very good. Decent wine selection. One of Joe's great strengths is that it is not pretentious. It has been a big success for decades and its horseshoe-shaped bar is a great place to meet new people. Service is friendly without being overly-familiar, and pretty prompt -- usually. Make reservations because you'll probably be disappointed if you don't. Final verdict: what they set out to achieve, they achieve very impressively.
