
In the third quarter of 2002, the Wine Spectator Auction Index rose 8 percent, to 190 (its highest level since the index's inception in the fourth quarter of 1995) from 176. In contrast, the Dow Jones dropped 18 percent during the third quarter, prompting one auction-goer to quip, "Collectible wine is beginning to look as attractive as real estate.
