
Many producers threw up their hands in defeat in early September after a massive hailstorm ripped through parts of Piedmont and put an end to any hope of salvaging the 2002 vintage for Barolo wines. In some of the best vineyards, most vines had been stripped of their leaves and carried only a crop of battered grapes.
