Mondavi Buys Italy's Famed Ornellaia Estate

Napa Valley giant brings in the Frescobaldis of Tuscany as partners

California's Robert Mondavi Winery and Tuscany's Marchesi de' Frescobaldi are jointly taking over one of Italy's greatest wine estates, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia. The nearly 200-acre estate, in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, produced Wine Spectator's 2001 Wine of the Year, the Ornellaia 1998 (96 points, $110).
