High above Salzburg, the Hohensalzburg Fortress looks down on the ancient city, as it has for over 900 years. The view from the fortress—roofs and cupolas of centuries-old buildings framed by the wooded slopes of the Alps—is the stuff that postcards and many clichés are made of.
