
A few years ago, a group of Neapolitan pizzaioli banded together to form the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, a group representing genuine Neapolitan pizza. Disturbed by the ersatz "Neapolitan-style" pizza marketed by fast-food outlets around the world, the organization lobbied the government and created an official DOC (Denominzione di Origine Controllata), similar to that for Italian wines, to protect the good name of Neapolitan pizza.
