Bloom Is Off for California Merlot

The 1998 vintage battled tricky weather, with few standouts

California Merlot suffered the same fate as most of the state's other wines in 1998. An uneven vintage marked by a long, cool growing season, 1998 produced only five outstanding Merlots in my tasting of 116 bottlings from the vintage.
