A former race car driver, Bernardus (Ben) Pon founded Bernardus Winery in California's Carmel Valley in 1989. Ten years later, he opened the Bernardus Lodge, a luxury hotel and spa, and determined he'd make its restaurant, Marinus, a wine destination.
