April 30th, 2000 Shafer Fine-Tuning a Proven Winner Shafer Vineyards' first success came nearly 20 years ago in response to its exceptional 1978 Cabernet. While phylloxera forced some replanting of the hillside block from which the '78 came, those vines are still a significant part of Shafer's flagship wine, the Hillside Select Cabernet.
