January 31st 2000 California Roundup By James Laube Cabernet and Merlot are riding high on the superb 1997 vintage, but expect wines from 1998 to be more variable in quality and scarcer in quantity. In 1997, Cabernet and Merlot shared one of the infrequent instances in which the vintage for both wines was outstanding; that doesn't happen as often as you might expect.
