He has locked up criminals (and an Emmy Award) as a small-town sheriff on the CBS series Picket Fences and, in the movies, commanded Tom Cruise in Top Gun , battled with Shirley MacLaine in Steel Magnolias and preached to Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It.
