May 31, 1998 Vega Sicilia's Winemaker Fired by Owners On April 6, Bodegas Vega Sicilia, Spain's foremost winery, abruptly fired Mariano García, its fabled winemaker for the past 30 years. Industry sources told the Madrid newspaper El Mundo that the decision was "irrevocable" and based on García's alleged "unloyal competition.
