March 31, 1997 A View of America From Abroad By Thomas Matthews The French love small birds. During a tour of great restaurants in France last March, I ate whole flocks of them. At Lameloise, a Michelin three-star in Burgundy, I feasted on squab, a tender young pigeon, roasted and smothered in chopped black truffles.
