October 31, 1996 Sotheby's Opens Season With $1.86 Million Splash Sotheby's launched the fall season in London on Sept. 11 with a $1.86 million sale, its biggest auction ever. The 1,104-lot sale witnessed numerous record prices, with many lots exceeding their averages in the Wine Spectator Auction Index for the second quarter of 1996 by as much as 30 percent.
