June 30, 1996 High-End Wine Sells Quickly in New York The first few minutes of the Sherry-Lehmann with Sotheby's May 11 wine auction foreshadowed the rest of the day's action. At a staccatoed clip, Jamie Ritchie, the head of Sotheby's New York wine department, knocked down two dozen lots of classic claret from the benchmark 1982 vintage mostly above the high estimates--and surpassing their first quarter 1996 averages in the Wine Spectator Auction Index by 20 to 40 percent in the process.
