September 15, 1995 Chardonnay's Popularity Just Keeps on Growing If you thought that Chardonnay was the most popular varietal wine from California, you're finally right. White Zinfandel, the long-time varietal leader, was displaced by Chardonnay last year, according to recent figures released by Impact newsletter.
