
June 30, 1994 East Tries To Meet West The small tasting of Georgian wines began in a dingy hotel room at London's Olympia Hilton. When I arrived, a happy band of vintners from the former Soviet republic were celebrating the birthday of one of their cohorts, drinking their own 8-year-old brandy with a meal from the nearby corner store, everything from roasted chicken and raw bacon to salad greens and hunks of white bread.
