June 15, 1994 Sotheby's Marks 250th Birthday With Sale Sotheby's celebrated its 250th anniversary with an April 13 sale featuring rare Bordeaux and Champagne. Although London's oldest and largest auction house was established in 1744, its wine department was founded only in 1970.
