South African wine first arrived on the international scene with tantalizing potential after apartheid in 1994. But in 2001 exports to the U.S. totaled just 230,000 cases and were dropping. South African vintners rebooted the Cape wine industry with eye-opening speed. Wine Spectator's James Molesworth explains.
