The Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District Hillside Select is widely recognized as one of Napa Valley's benchmarks for great wine, but it hardly looked like a star early on. Its rise to prominence reflects the trial-and-error winemaking of the 1970s and 1980s, mirroring the evolution of styles in Napa Valley. Wine Spectator's James Laube explains.
