The first hint that something was awry, says Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Burgundy's Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, was when wine connoisseurs showed his staff suspicious-looking bottles of DRC Romanée-Conti. Those suspicions proved well-founded. On Oct. 16, police officers across Europe swooped down on 20 houses and companies, seizing evidence and hauling in seven people for questioning.
