The Beaujolais crus, Soave, and reds from Sicily's Etna region are all wines Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson buys and enjoys on a regular basis. The first comes primarily from granite; the latter two from cooler areas with volcanic soils. What they all possess is freshness, mineral elements and a "drink me" character that provides immediate enjoyment. They are also good values. Generally, only the Etna reds will break the $40 barrier; most of the selections will be retail at $30 or less. Markup notwithstanding, that also makes them well-priced options when dining out.
