Traveling through Argentina two years ago introduced Wine Spectator's Jame Laube to two varietal wines that piqued his interest: Tannat and Torrontés. The former, a gutsy red, is popular in both Argentina and neighboring Uruguay, though no sooner had he returned home than a bottle made in California landed in his office. Torrontés, a white, is a delightfully easy-to-drink and pleasantly complex dining companion. The red variety Pinotage is a sturdy hybrid that is one of South Africa's signature wines; it shows its parent Pinot Noir with a Rhône-like twist.
